from the snowy mountains to the sandy beaches

happy hump day yall. while it is the middle of the week for most of you it feels like monday to me. the fact that it is rainy and super windy here in brooklyn does not help, but despite all of that, i am actually having a pretty good day. right now i am waiting for someone from emory's theater studies department to call me back which means i am getting some WORK done and that feels good. larry is meowing again. let me get him some treats...

ok, so jes and i just returned from a trip to colorado to see my sister kath and her family. we arrived in colorado late on thursday night. jes and i were both exhausted so we pretty much chatted a bit with kath and greg and then hit the hay. on friday we went to look at kath and greg's house they are building. here is a picture of it from the front:

they were working on the deck out back and preparing the front for a sidewalk and driveway. kath had hoped we could put our handprints in the sidewalk, but it ended up there were not at that point yet. after checking out the house we went and got ben's haircut. he goes to this place where they put the kids in little cars and let them watch videos (he watched bob the builder) and then while they are distracted by tv crack, they get their hair cut. very cute. ben did great and even got a little sticker. we then went to the whole foods, picked up some groceries and ate lunch. after that we went home and i think ben and i took a nap while jes studied and kath did something, i don't remember what.

on saturday, greg (kath's husband), jes and i went snowboarding at copper mountain. kath wasn't feeling well so she stayed home with ben. copper mountain is about 2.5 hours from their house in colorado springs. i have never been there nor had jes. now both greg and jes are seasoned skiers, though greg had not skied for about three years and jes had not for maybe more like ten years. i have skied a handful of times and snowboarded once. greg has snowboarded a number of times and jes never has. the drive there was uneventful save for my bladder almost bursting in the back of kath's suv. the problem is that i get so dehydrated in colorado so quickly that i am drinking like twelve glasses of water a minute (not really) and so i had to pee REAL BAD and of course we hit traffic and then a stretch of road with no bathroom and i thought i was going to die. thank god we got to a gas station and i peed for like seven minutes straight. it was divine. when we got to the mountain it was sunny and warm: a perfect day for snowboarding.

well greg took us up the lift, which, by the by scares the living shiznit out of me. i am always afraid i am going to fall off and then i am afraid of falling flat on my face as i get off it. of course i did fall off the lift, but out of the way of the next batch of skiers, so that is good. it ended up that this here lift took us to the TOP of the mountain- the land of blue and black runs, so we had to shimmy our way over to the green area. we went down this mountain that sort of looked greenish, but was really more blue. i had a great time. i would go about ten feet and then throw myself down b/c i was going so fast and then i would laugh my ass off. jes got pretty frustrated, but eventually (especially when we got to the green runs) got the hand of it. luckily greg took some photos on his cell phone. as you will see, i am on my ass in every pic, b/c that is where i was most of the afternoon- on my ass or on my knees. but i had a great time anyway. and it was a total body work out. i was sore for days. i love the pic of jes standing up and snowboarding. i think she looks hot.

it was a lot of fun and really tiring. after we went out to eat and then got some booze for the bears game on sunday and a surprise bday ice cream cake for kath. her birthday was sunday too.

sunday morning began as everyone's bday should begin. with breakfast from waffle house. kath and greg have never been, so jes and i took them. i think they enjoyed it. jes studied the rest of the morning while the rest of us went back to the house that is being built and ran some errands.

here we all are in front of waffle house. mmm i can smell the hashbrowns now:

and here is one of ben trying to look like nicole richie

and one of kath, greg and ben in front of the fireplace in the new house:

and lastly, a cute one of ben and kath. ben is in his new brooklyn sweatshirt jes and i got him for xmas and kath is in the shirt we got her for her bday:

two cute things about ben:
1. he loves to put his hands in his pockets. that is just how he walks around or evens sits watching tv. its adorable
2. on the ride to the airport, we taught him a new word: boomshakalaka. he kept saying it. so cute

so yeah sunday we watched the bears lose (oh bother) but ate and drank like kings while doing it. then we watched napoleon dynamite (kath and greg had not seen it). we left out of csprings on monday and made it into atlanta (where our connection was) just fine. but the flight from atl to nyc was overbooked and we got bumped BUT we got $400 vouchers, dinner and breakfast. they also offered us a hotel, but instead we went to hotel kim and sarah and watched the golden globes and last sunday's l word. the globes were really good and funny. the l word was painful. i mean really. the only thing good about it was carmen in her underwear. damn she has a body on her.

we got home, eventually, on tuesday afternoon. shortly after we arrived we drove to east brooklyn to pick up a package from azad. he sent me my new sorrel boots that i LOVE. i wore them out in the rain today and my feet stayed dry and toasty. he also sent jes a chicago bears hoody to welcome her into the family of da bears. she can't wait to wear it.

just a few hours ago i got a call from my supper club friends glennda and kim. those lucky ducks are on vacation in st. croix, virgin islands. i am jealous beyond belief really. anywho they called and told me there was a beach cam on their beach and i should look and see if i could see them. sure as shit i logged on and there they were. i saved a still of them and here it is. you can't really distinguish them (kim has the shorter hair and the jersey on; glennda with the longer hair and tshirt). anywho you can see the divine sandy beach and the ocean. ugh. i wish i was there right now.

it was really neat b/c glennda would be like "i am waving at you right now" and then thirty seconds later i would see a snapshot of her waving at me. of course, like a dork, i waved back.

that's all for now. have a good day yall.

Glad to see you're back safe and sound. The only bad thing about a surprise visit is that you leave again. We miss you!

Donna Troka has the best blog ever. Let the record state that she is not a dork, but rather a fun-loving gal who makes a mean bowl o' chilli, gives anyone a run for their "pop culture triva" money and, most importantly, tells it like it tis!

PS - Glennda & Kim look h-o-t! Hee hee.
